Malebranche fut formé en 2014 à Montréal, et développe depuis un black métal moderne, hypnotique et accrocheur.

Morcelé, qui sera lancé en 2021, est la troisième parution du groupe faisant suite à un album court paru en 2017 puis réédité en 2018 chez Winter Sky Records, et d’un album ‘split’ avec le groupe EOS sorti en 2019 via Les Productions Hérétiques. Depuis sa création, Malebranche s’est formé une solide réputation au sein de la scène Métal Noir Québécois, s’y distinguant toutefois par une sonorité caractéristique et des thèmes plus intimes qu’épiques. Leurs albums ont également connu du succès au seins des radios locales et ont été vendus à l’international, particulièrement au sein des niches black métal, métal atmosphérique et post-métal.

Le premier album long attendu de la formation marque une maturation au niveau des compositions et un élargissement des influences musicales. Cet opus est également appuyé par une signature sonore plus franche assurée par Tehom Productions (Gevurah, Incandescence). Le groupe y perfectionne leur formule appréciée, mélangeant les couches de guitares paradoxalement éthérées mais incisives, une batterie dynamique, une basse lourde et des vocalises tranchantes. Ainsi, Morcelé enchaînes les mélodies répétitives et envoutantes traversées de rythmes agressifs et frontaux, en une intégration fluide rarement achevée.

Cette cohabitation unique d’éléments sied parfaitement aux thèmes qui dirigent l’album. Morcelé explore la mosaïque d’états qui articulent le mal-être humain, en aucun cas monolithique. En traversant l’album, on réalise que la détresse ne réside pas dans la présence des scissions naturelles qui nous habitent, mais émerge plutôt d’une incapacité à naviguer ces craques qui nous morcèlent.

Malebranche was formed in 2014 in Montreal (Canada), offering a modern and hypnotic blend of black metal ever since.

Morcelé [Fragmented], the third release of the band scheduled to come out in 2021, follows their debut EP released in 2017 and re-pressed in 2018 on Winter Sky Records, and a split album with EOS (Quebec) released on Les Productions Hérétiques in 2019. Since their inception, Malebranche have gained a steady following in the “Métal Noir Québécois” scene and beyond, distinguishing themselves by a distinct sound and intimate lyrical themes. Their records have also gained a following in local radio stations and were sold internationally, particularly valued amongst the atmospheric, black metal and post-metal scenes.

On their long awaited first LP, Malebranche fulfils expectations with richer songwriting infused with broader musical influences, and a forthright sound production by Tehom Productions (Gevurah, Incandescence). The appreciated formula of the band founds itself further improved, with layers of paradoxically sharp and ethereal guitars, heavy fuzz-filled bass, energic blasting drums and incisive vocals.

Hence, the pieces of Morcelé oscillate between bewitching riffs, aggressive blasts, and slower heavy segments, in a unique and seamless amalgam of elements from various metal sub-genres which accompanies the thematic thread of the album impeccably. Indeed, Morcelé explores the mosaic of states characterizing the great human angst, which is all but monolithic. Throughout the record, we appreciate that the most profound distress does not reside in the mere existence of the natural schisms within our being, but rather emerges from an inability to navigate those fissures, leaving us fragmented.

NONE a opéré un virage dans Where Life Should Be et ça se confirme davantage dans Damp Chill of Life. Le temps des métaphores est révolu : l'humidité froide, c'est celle des larmes qui coulent sur le visage à cause de la dépression. Tout pleure dans cet album : les guitares typées DSBM grésillent, les solos ("The Damp Chill of Life", "It's Painless To Let Go") sont liquides et coulent, les voix prennent à la gorge ; même le piano, étranglé par les sanglots ("Cease"), est aphone. Late 90's BM worship, but it's also a lil more than that. This album takes the best elements from the scene it's inspired by and mostly avoids the worst of it; the song-writing is well-written, it's performed with passion and fun, and the production is raw but isn't lo-fi. (i.e. it doesn't obfuscate and/or suckass). Tl;dr It's safe but high quality BM. Recommended. Rabbit

On ne frappe pas un homme à terre : c'est ce que dit la règle mais NONE a déjà prouvé qu'il ne les suivait pas et si son album éponyme retirait toute perspective de béatitude spirituelle, Life has gone on long enough, son deuxième opus, nous interdit l'accès au bonheur terrestre. La vie n'a aucune substance et la production plus distante le confirme. Le DSBM s'empare de textures sonores blues, mettant en relief une dépression urbaine. Les cris partent en fumées : ne restent que les pleurs... Jordan Vauvert
